National School Lunch Week |
||
|
National School Lunch Week was established on October 9, 1962 by a Joint Resolution of Congress. The resolution requested that the President of the United States issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe such a week. The seven day period begins on the second Sunday in October and continues for the next seven days. John F. Kennedy was the first president to issue such a proclamation. Each year subsequent presidents have followed his lead. The National School Lunch Program was authorized by the 79th Congress in 1946. Since that time many changes have occurred pertaining to the funding of the program. However, it has always been the goal of The National School Lunch Program to provide America's children with nutritious meals at no cost or a reduced cost. Today approximately 145 million school lunches are served every week. These balanced meals provide the fruits, vegetables, grains and protein that children need to succeed in school.
